Essential Oil Basics

On my journey to reduce toxins in our home, essential oils were a natural fit.  For us, they've replaced fragrance, provided mood support, and have assisted with relief from various skin issues and minor medical issues.  I'm told they are all the rage and that everyone is talking about them.  Well, besides being a fad, people are really talking about them because they work!  Essential oils can be a great compliment to your wellness, along with proper nutrition and fitness.

Just what is an essential oil?
They are oils that are extracted generally via steam distillation or cold pressing.  They come from plants, seeds, trees, flowers, and other natural sources.  They are highly concentrated.  Just one drop of pure peppermint oil can roughly equal 28 cups of peppermint tea.

How do they work?
Essential oils have the ability to work at the cellular level.  They effectively penetrate our cell membranes and assist the cells in fighting attacks or with reprogramming them.  They assist our body with doing what it knows it needs to do.

What are the side effects?
Generally, none!  As with anything, you know your body chemistry best and should make sure you do not have any diseases or use any medications that would make using a specific oil harmful.  Some essential oils should be applied using a carrier oil to avoid skin sensitivity.

Are all essential oils safe?
Unfortunately, no.  You need to do your homework and ensure the essential oils you are purchasing are of pure, therapeutic grade and have undergone rigorous and value added testing to ensure that they are pure, of the plant species noted, and do not contain any other harmful by products or preservatives.  Sadly, many companies do add preservatives or other fillers to their bottles.

I recommend watching the three short videos here.

How can they be used?
They can be diffused into the air, applied topically, or taken internally.  Again I only recommend using essential oils of the highest quality available.
